Madrid Qualifying: Lando Norris Takes Pole by 0.011 Seconds!
Lando Norris — POLE POSITION!
Let's start with the biggest story. LANDO. NORRIS. P1. Lando produced a 1:31.824 when it mattered to take pole position in Madrid and when you look at his entire weekend, it makes the result even more impressive.
FP1 — P6
FP2 — Almost no running
FP3 — P4
Qualifying — P1 🥇
After that gearbox problem cost him valuable track time on Friday, Lando had some catching up to do. He needed a strong FP3. He got it. Then qualifying arrived… and Lando delivered.
Just 0.011 Seconds!
We HAVE to talk about the gap. Eleven thousandths of a second. That's all that separated Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli produced a 1:31.835. Lando? 1:31.824. Pole. One tiny mistake could've completely changed the result. One braking point. One corner. One small correction. That's how close this qualifying session was but when Lando needed to produce the lap? He did it.
Kimi Antonelli — P2
I've got to give Antonelli credit as well. He's looked incredibly strong throughout the Madrid weekend.
FP1 — P2
FP2 — P1
FP3 — P1
Qualifying — P2
He misses pole by just 0.011 seconds, but he's still put himself in a brilliant position for the race and he's starting directly alongside Lando. That means our run into Turn 1 could be VERY interesting. Norris vs Antonelli. Bring it on!
Max Verstappen — P3
Lewis Hamilton — P4
What a recovery from Lewis Hamilton. After crashing during FP3, Hamilton bounced back to qualify P4. That's a really impressive response. Ferrari had work to do after his accident, but Lewis delivered when qualifying arrived. He's got Verstappen directly ahead and starts ahead of his Ferrari teammate. Which brings us to Charles Leclerc.
Charles Leclerc — P5
Charles Leclerc — P5. After finishing P2 during FP3, I thought Charles could be one of the serious contenders for pole. Instead, he'll start from the third row. It's definitely not a disaster. He's still close enough to get involved in the race but considering the pace we saw earlier in the day, I think Ferrari would've hoped for a little more.
George Russell — P6
George Russell qualifies P6. That's another interesting result. Russell topped FP1, and Mercedes have looked incredibly quick throughout the weekend but when qualifying arrived, it was Antonelli who came closest to taking pole. Russell still has a strong car underneath him, but he's now got plenty of very quick drivers ahead. Moving forward won't be easy.
Oscar Piastri — P7
Now we need to talk about the other Papaya boy. Because while Lando celebrates pole… Oscar Piastri will start P7 and I think Oscar will be disappointed with that. His weekend had been moving in the right direction.
FP1 — P8
FP2 — P7
FP3 — P3
Then qualifying? P7. After that FP3 performance, it looked like Oscar could potentially fight for the front two rows. Unfortunately, it didn't come together when it mattered.
Can Oscar Recover?
Absolutely. P7 isn't where Oscar would've wanted to start, but his weekend is far from over. He's already shown that the McLaren has pace. We know that because his teammate is sitting on pole. Now Oscar's race becomes all about recovery. He needs a strong start. He needs to take any opportunities that come his way and McLaren need to get the strategy right. For me, the top five has to be the minimum target. If things fall his way? Maybe he can go even higher.
Two Very Different Races for the Papaya Boys
McLaren now have two completely different jobs on Sunday.
Lando Norris — P1 🧡
Oscar Piastri — P7 🧡
Lando needs to defend. Oscar needs to attack. For Lando, it's about getting through Turn 1 ahead and trying to control the race from the front. For Oscar, it's about immediately looking forward and trying to make up positions. That makes McLaren's strategy really interesting. Can they get both cars into strong finishing positions?
Liam Lawson — P8
Another strong performance from Liam Lawson. After finishing P7 in FP3, Lawson qualifies P8. He's starting directly behind Oscar. That means Oscar can't focus entirely on attacking the cars ahead. He's also got to make sure Lawson doesn't become a problem behind him.
Madrid Qualifying Top 10
Here's how the top ten will line up:
P1 — Lando Norris
P2 — Kimi Antonelli
P3 — Max Verstappen
P4 — Lewis Hamilton
P5 — Charles Leclerc
P6 — George Russell
P7 — Oscar Piastri
P8 — Liam Lawson
P9 — Franco Colapinto
P10 — Arvid Lindblad
Just look at that front of the grid. McLaren. Mercedes. Red Bull. Ferrari. This could be a brilliant race.
Heartbreak for the Home Crowd
Unfortunately, qualifying was much tougher for the two Spanish drivers.
Carlos Sainz — P17
Fernando Alonso — P18
Both were eliminated in Q1. That's definitely not what the Madrid crowd would've wanted. They're going to need something special to fight their way through the field on Sunday but it's Formula 1. Safety Cars, strategy calls and mistakes can completely change a race. It's not over yet.
Can Lando Convert Pole Into Victory?
Now we get to the big question. Can Lando win this race? He's put himself in the best possible starting position but getting pole is only half the job. Antonelli is alongside him. Verstappen is directly behind. Hamilton is P4. That opening lap is going to be crucial. If Lando gets a strong launch and keeps the lead, McLaren can start thinking about controlling the race but if Antonelli gets alongside him? Or if Max gets a brilliant start? Things could get chaotic very quickly.
My Madrid Race Prediction
After that qualifying performance, I'm backing Lando.
🏆 P1 — Lando Norris 🧡
He's got pole. McLaren clearly have pace and after everything that happened on Friday, Lando seems to have found his rhythm around Madring Antonelli will be a massive threat. Max will be waiting for any opportunity and Ferrari aren't far behind. For Oscar, I'm predicting a recovery drive. From P7, I want to see him get into the top five.
Papaya Boys Verdict
Two very different qualifying stories for McLaren.
🥇 Lando Norris — P1 🧡
7️⃣ Oscar Piastri — P7 🧡
For Lando, that was an incredible performance. He lost valuable running on Friday, recovered during FP3 and then produced the lap when everything was on the line. For Oscar? It's disappointing after showing such strong pace in FP3 but he's still got Sunday to turn things around and for us McLaren fans? This race is going to be VERY interesting.
On the Pitwall Verdict
What a qualifying session. Lando Norris takes pole position in Madrid by just 0.011 seconds. Antonelli comes unbelievably close in P2. Verstappen is waiting in P3. Hamilton recovers brilliantly to take P4 and Oscar has a recovery job ahead of him from P7. Now everything is set for race day. The biggest question? Can Lando Norris convert pole into victory? Or will Antonelli, Verstappen or Ferrari spoil the party? and how far can Oscar climb from P7? Let me know your predictions Who wins in Madrid? Where will Oscar finish? and what did you think of Lando's pole lap?
On the Pitwall
Lights out. More to talk about.
