Baku FP3: Verstappen Goes Fastest as Qualifying Battle Heats Up
Verstappen Strikes Back
Max Verstappen put Red Bull at the top of the timing screens when it mattered. His 1:43.922 was enough for P1, giving Red Bull some encouragement heading into qualifying. Max certainly doesn't have a comfortable advantage. Russell and Hamilton are right behind him, meaning finding even a tenth of a second could make a huge difference when we get to qualifying. That's exactly what you want before the battle for pole.
Russell Keeps the Pressure On
George Russell continued to show serious pace in Baku. After leading both FP1 and FP2, Russell finished FP3 in P2, only 0.099 seconds behind Verstappen. That's less than a tenth. Mercedes have looked competitive throughout the weekend, and Russell appears to be firmly in the conversation for pole position. He did have a moment at Turn 7 during FP3, locking up and heading into the escape road, but he recovered and remained one of the quickest drivers on track. Can Russell turn that practice pace into pole?
Hamilton Joins the Fight
Lewis Hamilton made it three drivers separated by only 0.111 seconds. Hamilton finished P3, putting himself right into the qualifying conversation. A late tow helped his final effort, but the time still showed that the pace is there. With Russell P2 and Hamilton P3, Mercedes head into qualifying looking dangerous.
Antonelli P4
Kimi Antonelli continued Mercedes' strong showing with P4. He finished 0.351 seconds away from Verstappen. After the hydraulic problems that limited his running during FP1, Antonelli has bounced back strongly over the following sessions. Three practice sessions down, and Mercedes certainly look like they have a car capable of fighting near the front.
Leclerc Leads Ferrari in P5
Charles Leclerc ended FP3 in P5, 0.622 seconds behind Verstappen. That's a larger gap than the leading Mercedes cars, but counting Ferrari out around Baku would be a mistake. This circuit has produced plenty of surprises over the years, and qualifying around these streets is all about confidence. One mistake can destroy a lap. One perfect lap can completely change the picture.
Gasly Impresses
Pierre Gasly produced one of the more eye-catching performances of the session by taking P6. With Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren all fighting around him, getting into sixth was an encouraging result. If that pace carries into qualifying, Gasly could become a factor in the battle further up the grid.
Papaya Boys Make Progress
Now we need to talk about McLaren. After a difficult Friday, there were signs of improvement. Oscar Piastri finished P7 with a 1:44.746, leaving him 0.824 seconds behind Verstappen. Just behind him was Lando Norris in P8, setting a 1:44.899 and finishing 0.977 seconds away from P1. It's still not where McLaren will want to be. Compared with FP2, when Lando and Oscar were around a second and a half away from Russell's benchmark, the gap has come down. That's progress. The question is whether McLaren have something extra waiting for qualifying. We know how quickly the competitive order can change when the fuel comes out and everybody turns everything up. Could Lando and Oscar suddenly jump into the fight? That's one of the biggest questions heading into qualifying.

Now It's Time for Qualifying
Practice is over. Now the lap times really matter. Verstappen is fastest, but Russell is only 0.099 seconds behind. Hamilton is only another 0.012 seconds back. Antonelli is lurking in fourth. Leclerc is still in the fight. McLaren will be hoping they've got more performance to unleash. Around Baku, qualifying can change in an instant. Yellow flags. Red flags. Traffic. Lock-ups. The walls waiting for anyone who gets it slightly wrong. There is almost no room for error. So who's taking pole? Max Verstappen? George Russell? Lewis Hamilton? Could Ferrari produce something special? Or are Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri about to pull a surprise out of the Papaya hat? We'll find out soon.
On the Pitwall — Lights out. More to talk about.
